5R Concept
As citizens of planet earth, we have a role in caring and safeguarding our global home and one of the effective ways is to manage our waste sustainably, responsibly and to embrace circular economy. We can do this by following the five R's of waste management of which are Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Recovery. This is also in support of the government's Separation at Source (SAS) initiative.
Refuse
Prevention is better than cure. It is best to not create unwanted or additional waste. Or, is there a better option and possibly, to it with something more environment-friendly.
Reduce
Reducing waste is the most important thing we can do to prevent excessive waste. This also avoids the unnecessary use of valuable natural resources such as raw materials, minerals, energy and water
Reuse
Reuse means you don't have to use new items everytime such as using food container rather than single-use plastic when buying and packing food. It saves money, energy and resources that would have been used to make the new product
Recycle
Recycling involves some form of reprocessing of waste materials to produce another product. For example, recycling of waste paper to make boxes or paper bags. Composting is also a form of recycling (of food waste). It is like giving a 'second life' to these items.
Recovery
"Recover" is a broader term than recycling, because it also includes processes like incinerator (which can lead to energy recovery, through not the recovery of raw materials). This also include turning plastic to fuel or, anaerobic digester, of turning organic matter such as food waste, to produce biogas and bio fertiliser.
